Abstract: VSMB (Versatile Soil Moisture Balance Model) is a soil moisture monitoring model originated in late 1960s in Canada. Using daily weather data, considering the distribution of the water abstracting ability of root systems and soil water holding characteristics whthin soil profile, VSBM model calculates the daily soil moisture and other soil water balance elements such as evapotranspiration, infiltration ect. This paper introduced the physical work chart of this model and listed a little samples of utilization of the model to China. The VSMB model is relatively simple and understandable. The model works by submodels combined together and is relatively easy to be improved or corrected to a new location. It is a good submental model to use for Chinese water saving agriculture.
